If the recent season of the hit reality competition series The Traitors marked your introduction to Maura Higgins, you’ve stepped into the orbit of a burgeoning media personality. The 35-year-old Irish star first captured widespread attention during season five of the immensely popular dating show Love Island UK. There, she cultivated a devoted following with her unvarnished candor, spirited demeanor, and memorable catchphrases. While her participation in The Traitors saw a more measured, strategic persona emerge, her impact was undeniable. Higgins reached the finale as a "faithful," only to be blindsided by fellow Love Island alum Rob Rausch, who revealed himself as a traitor and claimed the $220,800 prize. Her raw, authentic reaction to this betrayal, coupled with her distinctive Irish accent and polished presentation, quickly propelled her to newfound fame across the Atlantic.
For those who have followed Higgins since her Love Island days, her deep-seated connection to the beauty industry is no secret. Prior to her television career, Higgins honed her skills as a hairdresser for a decade in her hometown of Ballymahon, Ireland. This foundational experience, she shared with Allure, proved unexpectedly useful during the challenging filming conditions of The Traitors in the Scottish Highlands, particularly when managing her extensive wig collection. A consistent spray tan is practically a signature element of her appearance, and she is meticulously dedicated to her "budge-proof makeup routine," which she maintains both on and off-screen. "If I’m going for lunch with my girls, I do the exact same glam," she stated, underscoring her commitment to a consistent aesthetic. Her entrepreneurial ventures in beauty include a successful false lash line, "False Flutters," launched in 2020 with Primark, and past collaborations with iconic brands like L’Oréal Paris and MAC Cosmetics, both of which she continues to endorse.
Despite the sting of Rausch’s betrayal on The Traitors, which he later attempted to assuage with a lavish Hermès Birkin bag, Higgins has demonstrated remarkable resilience and career momentum. Since the show’s conclusion, her profile has surged with significant campaign appearances for Victoria’s Secret and Uber. She has also graced Milan Fashion Week and hosted red carpet events for the acclaimed production company A24. With an undisclosed U.S.-based project on the horizon, the landscape of potential beauty endorsements and partnerships appears ripe for further expansion.
In an exclusive interview with Allure, Higgins candidly discussed her evolving beauty practices, her journey with wigs, and the secrets behind her flawless makeup application.
The Evolution of a Beauty Routine: From Love Island to The Traitors
Allure: The contrasting environments of a villa in Fiji for Love Island and a castle in Scotland for The Traitors presented unique challenges, especially concerning self-styling. Looking back, what significant changes have you observed in your beauty routine between these two experiences?
Maura Higgins: "Honestly, I feel like a lot has changed. You get to know your face much better over time. My initial approach to makeup was much heavier, almost overly done. As you become more comfortable in your own skin, you develop a better understanding of what truly suits you. I used to rely heavily on eyeshadow, but now I find a touch of bronzer on the eyes suffices. Reflecting on my past looks, I sometimes marvel at how excessive they were."
Decoding The Traitors Glam: Daily Rituals and Product Staples
Allure: Could you break down your typical makeup routine during The Traitors? Was it consistent each day, and what were some of your key product choices?
Maura Higgins: "My foundation of choice throughout filming was MAC Studio Fix Foundation, paired with NARS Concealer, which I absolutely love. I believe I started using it because my makeup artist frequently incorporated it into my looks. MAC Spice lip liner was an unwavering staple, applied every single day. I was fortunate to receive a substantial supply of MAC Spice liners during a campaign with MAC last year, which should last me for quite some time."
"For setting my makeup, the L’Oréal Infallible Setting Spray was indispensable. This product has been a true lifesaver, particularly given the need for makeup to withstand long filming days, challenging missions, and the often harsh Scottish weather. It ensured my makeup remained intact despite the cold and rain. I also became quite fond of Patrick Ta blushes; they are truly exceptional."
"Regarding mascara, I typically opted for a gold-tubed L’Oréal mascara. While I’m unsure if it’s explicitly waterproof, I’ve surprisingly never experienced significant mascara smudging, even with non-waterproof formulas. It’s a peculiar phenomenon that I can’t quite explain."
The Enduring Appeal of MAC Spice
Allure: When did MAC Spice lip liner become your definitive go-to product?
Maura Higgins: "I’ve been using MAC Spice for years now; I genuinely can’t recall what I used before it. I simply adore the shade. My natural lip pigment is quite minimal. I often consider the possibility of getting permanent lip blush, but I hesitate, fearing that it might alter how Spice looks on me. I’ve observed this with friends; the same liner can appear quite different on them. My makeup artist often points out my lack of natural lip pigment, attributing it to my Irish heritage."
The Solitary Ritual of Glamour
Allure: During filming, did you have opportunities to interact with castmates while preparing your look, or was it a solitary endeavor?
Maura Higgins: "The process of getting ready was entirely solitary. I recall having Spotify accessible on the TVs, as I would often play music. While there were periods off-camera where conversations were permitted, they were strictly game-free. These moments allowed us to truly get to know each other on a personal level. However, for the daily glam routine, it was a private affair."
"Sleep was a scarce commodity due to the demanding filming schedules, often averaging only three hours per night. This personal time was crucial for relaxation, enjoying a coffee, and applying makeup without distractions, either in silence or with calming music. I frequently chose Ludovico Einaudi, as his music has a profoundly soothing effect on me."
Consistency is Key: On-Camera vs. Everyday Glam
Allure: How does your on-camera makeup differ from your everyday look? Do you tend to amplify your features for the cameras?

Maura Higgins: "I deliberately avoid ‘turning up the glam’ for the camera, as I fear it could lead to a makeup mishap. The exact same makeup I wear on television is what I apply for a casual lunch with friends. I find it difficult to deviate from my established routine. Perhaps for an evening event, I might experiment with a slightly more pronounced wing, but that’s the extent of it. Despite others complimenting my makeup skills, I don’t consider myself an expert. When my professional makeup artist works on me, the results are consistently outstanding and long-lasting; I could genuinely sleep in it and it wouldn’t budge. However, my own application, while consistent, doesn’t always achieve the same longevity. I adhere to a tried-and-true formula because I understand what works and what flatters my face. As the saying goes, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’"
Learning from the Masters: New Techniques and Insights
Allure: You’ve recently collaborated with Patrick Ta. Have you adopted any new techniques or insights from him or other makeup artists you’ve worked with?
Maura Higgins: "One technique I observed with Patrick Ta was his method of contouring before applying foundation. This is something I had never done previously, and I am keen to try it myself to see the results. It was a novel approach for me. Professional makeup artists possess incredible talent; watching them work makes a technique appear deceptively simple, but it is significantly more challenging in practice. I doubt I could replicate his precise application."
The Scent of Success: Signature Fragrances
Allure: You’ve humorously remarked on being the best-smelling person in The Traitors castle. Could you share your preferred fragrances?
Maura Higgins: "My two signature scents are Christian Dior Oud Ispahan and Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Baccarat Rouge 540. I never layer them; I choose one or the other depending on my mood for the day. These are my absolute staples, always carried in my handbag."
The Art of the Tan: A Weekly Ritual
Allure: Could you describe your weekly tanning routine? Have you perfected this process?
Maura Higgins: "I have the quintessential pale Irish complexion. Understanding the nuances of self-tanning is something I’ve mastered. It might sound extreme, but my work schedule is often arranged around my tanning appointments; my manager is well aware of its importance to me. I simply feel more confident and ready to face the world with a tan. Without it, I don’t feel quite as put-together."
Professional Application vs. Self-Tanning
Allure: Do you typically have a professional spray tan, or do you self-tan?
Maura Higgins: "I do both. For important events, such as significant red carpet appearances or travel for work, I have a professional come to my home. I’ve been using the same trusted technician for about six years. For less formal occasions, like meeting friends or smaller events, I might opt for an instant self-tan. However, I find myself leaning more towards professional spray tans lately, as they are significantly more convenient."
A Dedicated Skincare Regimen: Products and Philosophy
Allure: Please walk us through your skincare routine. What are some of your favorite products, and what does your typical regimen involve?
Maura Higgins: "Currently, I’m using Revive Foaming Cleanser and the Rhode Glazing Milk Mist. My eye cream of choice is from La Mer. While La Mer products are indeed expensive, their efficacy is undeniable. I do not use a toner, for reasons I can’t precisely articulate. For moisturizer, I alternate between La Mer and, when I’m trying to conserve my La Mer supply, Augustinus Bader products. That brand name is notoriously difficult to pronounce, and I suspect I’ve been saying it incorrectly for some time. Their formulations are truly exceptional. I also hold a strong preference for Tatcha moisturizers, particularly the one housed in the purple tub, which I find imparts a beautiful glow."
The Journey to Skin Barrier Health
Allure: Have you always been invested in skincare? Was it a lengthy process to establish your current routine?
Maura Higgins: "Skincare has always been a passion of mine. At one point, I experienced severe perioral dermatitis, which I now suspect was a consequence of over-treating my skin. While dermatologists may not have a definitive cause, the theory suggests that using too many products and undergoing excessive facials can compromise the skin barrier. When this occurred, I significantly pared back my skincare regimen. I still experience occasional breakouts; I had one just last week, which was disheartening. I believe stress plays a role, particularly during periods of intense work and sleep deprivation. When flares occur, the most effective approach for me is to simplify my routine to just a cleanser and moisturizer. I no longer use retinols, having stopped them the moment perioral dermatitis manifested, as they felt too harsh for my skin."
The Onset of Perioral Dermatitis
Allure: When did you first encounter perioral dermatitis?
Maura Higgins: "It was approximately three years ago, and the condition was quite severe, affecting my eyelids and chin area. Initially, I was unfamiliar with it, leading me to conduct extensive research. I’ve since learned that a ‘less is more’ approach is crucial. I no longer require weekly facials or regular retinol treatments. I’ve even reduced my exfoliation frequency, as I find over-exfoliation often triggers breakouts."
Pampering and Procedures: A Balanced Approach
Allure: Given your decision to scale back on frequent facials, are there any other beauty treatments you particularly enjoy?
Maura Higgins: "When I’m in Los Angeles, I find the facials at Kate Somerville to be quite gentle. They offer a bespoke facial designed to deeply cleanse the skin, removing impurities and residual makeup, while also providing significant hydration. It’s the only facial treatment I consistently seek out, and it leaves my skin feeling remarkably refreshed, especially before a flight."

Allure: Do you engage in any other aesthetic procedures?
Maura Higgins: "I do receive Botox treatments, but I do not use fillers. I frequently see discussions on TikTok suggesting I’ve had cheek fillers, and I’ve read numerous articles claiming this. However, I can definitively state that I have never had cheek filler. There have also been mentions of an eyelift, though I’m unfamiliar with that specific procedure. If the topic is Botox, then yes, I do undergo those treatments. The only filler I have ever had was lip filler, and that was years ago. I used to have it done quite regularly, even before Love Island, but I haven’t had it for a considerable period. I have never had facial fillers, and the idea terrifies me. It seems some people don’t grasp this, as articles have even suggested I’m being untruthful when I state I haven’t had procedures. I assure you, I am always candid."
"I have also undergone dental work. Following Love Island, I had Invisalign to straighten my teeth, followed by bonding, which naturally alters the facial structure significantly. I have also lost weight since Love Island. Furthermore, mastering makeup techniques that complement one’s facial structure can create a dramatic transformation."
"If I were to pursue any cosmetic enhancements, I would be entirely open about it. If a procedure could boost my self-confidence, I would certainly consider it. When the time comes for a facelift, I will absolutely pursue it. I have my sights set on consulting with the same practitioner as Kris Jenner, as her results are truly remarkable."
Taming the Mane: Hair Management During The Traitors
Allure: The damp Scottish climate presented a significant challenge for your naturally curly hair. How did you manage it throughout filming?
Maura Higgins: "The most effective strategy I employed was bringing a selection of wigs. I’m not exaggerating when I say my hair would have been unmanageable otherwise. It’s exceptionally curly with numerous cowlicks at the front, and even a hint of mist causes it to become unmanageable. My solution involved braiding my hair, securing it with pins, and then wearing a wig and my signature beret. For the missions, I would remove the wig, protecting it from the elements, and then place a beanie over my braids before venturing out into the adverse weather conditions. Upon returning, I would reapply my wig, completing my look."
The Wig Strategy: A Last-Minute Solution
Allure: How many wigs did you bring, and how did you incorporate them into your look?
Maura Higgins: "I brought three wigs, which is my entire collection at present. I’m keen to acquire more, as I enjoy changing my hairstyle with different colors, lengths, and styles. While I may not be the most skilled at wig application, they were a lifesaver. They significantly reduced styling time and saved me from considerable hair-related stress. The wigs were a spontaneous decision made shortly before filming commenced. I hadn’t initially planned for this challenge. I was already intending to wear hats, which I adore, and the wigs provided an easy way to conceal the wig lace and any potential imperfections, as I lacked the expertise for a perfect glue-down application. The hats provided the perfect cover, and I was already packing them, so it all aligned serendipitously."
A Decade in the Salon: The Foundation of a Career
Allure: Was hairdressing your childhood aspiration?
Maura Higgins: "As a child, it was indeed something I aspired to do. I left school early and immediately enrolled in hairdressing college. From there, I began working in salons, starting from the ground up – making teas and coffees and washing hair. I gained experience at several different salons, achieved my full qualification, and then established my practice in my hometown. I maintained a full clientele for a decade. Eventually, I reached a point where I felt ready for a new chapter, questioning what lay ahead and concluding that I didn’t wish to continue in that profession indefinitely."
Hairdressing Skills Beyond the Salon
Allure: Do your hairdressing skills prove useful in managing your own hair?
Maura Higgins: "With dedicated effort, I can style my own hair effectively. I can create a sleek, tight bun and perform a professional blow-dry using a round brush and hairdryer. I also color my own roots, as my gray hair appears rapidly, requiring touch-ups every two weeks. It’s quite pronounced; I have a significant amount of gray hair, with a patch appearing at the age of 17."
Allure: Do you envision yourself ever embracing your natural gray hair?
Maura Higgins: "No, I don’t believe I would. While I never say never, I cannot imagine choosing to let it grow out."
A Glimpse into the Future: An Upcoming U.S. Project
Allure: Can you offer any hints about your upcoming projects?
Maura Higgins: "If I were to provide a hint, I would inevitably reveal too much, and you would know precisely what it is. I don’t see a way to offer a clue without giving it all away. However, I can confirm that it is a U.S. television show, and the details will be publicly known very, very soon."
